Kuala Trengganu

That was a pleasant trip to Kuala Trengganu . 25 of us went, by bus from Kuala Lumpur, leaving Kuala Lumpur at mid-morning, and it took 10 hours to go and 10 hours to come back. It was light and easy journey. Here is a photo of us ‘old kids’.

Looked like everyone enjoyed themselves. And to keep the journey and the trip interesting there was a bit of a debate about ‘what makes a good home front’.

It’s a subject with no real answer, since the time when God created Adam and Eve.

We had an un-comparable host in Kuala Trengganu, without he and his wife, we would not have enjoyed our stay as much as we did. We thank you Mr & Mrs Mat Zain Sulaiman.

And all those whom we were the guests of.

And of course the women folks enjoyed their shopping, as usual.

"Cukur Jambul"

On Sunday 25th March 2007, Patikan (class of 60) was invited to join Sdr Nik Zainal (one of the Patikans) & wife on their ‘cukur jambul’ ceremony for their 4th Grand child. It was a grand occasion, and Patikan really took time to enjoy themselves at the ceremony.

What is cukur jambul.? Its explained here, http://ms.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cukur_jambul

And someone wrote this about the ceremony,

” Adat Cukur Jambul

A Traditional Malay Ceremony celebrated for the new born baby.

This occasion is celebrated by Malay Community whereby a newly born baby born will celebrate on the 7th. day of birth with a "Kendury" of "Aqiqah" . In this celebration if the baby is a boy, 2 goats will be cut while only one goat for a baby girl. In that ceremony the parents of the baby will invite all neighbors from the village depending on the status of the family for Custom recital and sumptuous feast.

The peak of the celebration is whereby the baby will be pass from one person to another in their arm cradled cutely in the big circle and the baby will be sprinkled with holy water with "bunga rampai" , a certain portion of the baby's hair will be cut (cukur Jambul) and the baby's mouth with be sprinkled with holy water and sweet / sour / salty food as symbol of knowing and experiencing the new life.

While the above occasion is taking place, there will be a singing of " Marhaban" (Custom recitals).

After that, all invited guests will be invited for brunch or high tea and these guests will be given "Bunga Telur "as a gift while leaving the occasion.”

Quite close.

It was almost like that at Sdr Nik’s house. But no "bunga telor", as far as I could see.

And of the Patikan, they had late breakfast earlier, the joined in the ‘doa selamat’, a sort of prayer similar to thanksgiving of the past and for the future, read verses from the Quraan, and joined the host and the guests for lunch after that.

And the Patikan even had a meeting at site for planning of their future activities.

It was a satisfying day, thank you Sdr Nik Zianal & Sdri Daisy.

A day at FRIM

Reference.

http://www.frim.gov.my/

http://www.frim.gov.my/facilities_canopy.htm

http://www.virtualmalaysia.com/destination/forest%20research%20institute%20of%20malaysia%20(frim).html

The gang decided to have the monthly breakfast gathering from the normal ‘tame’ environment in town, mostly in urban restaurants (Indian mostly) or in hotels (air conditioning and all) to a ‘wild’ site. Breakfast gathering to be held in a forested area. But of course it’s a forest in an urban vicinity, but still a forest with all the characters of a forest, a tropical forest. It was FRIM where we all decided to go to. Planned for a jungle walk, and probably a visit to a tree top canopy walk. It was an ambitious plan indeed.

Come Sunday morning 25th Feb. 2007, we all gathered at FRIM, gathered is a misnomer really, many found their way to FRIM, but most lost their way in FRIM, searching for the Biz CafĂ©’ where we were all supposed to gather for breakfast before going on our adventure. Most made it by 10.00 o’clock,

but one of our members just lost his way in KL, and did not even make it to the gathering. He ended up having lunch at IKEA, almost 120 deg away on the opposite side of the KL City centre.

By about 10.30 am, the walk started, adults and children, all eager to explore the jungle. guided by a FRIM staff.

Started of with seeing the Big Fish, a South American species …. cannot remember what its called now. Then the walk into the jungle. Not really a jungle but into the area where trees and plants were especially planted but never harvested for the last 50 years or so. The path were quite clear really, unlike a real tropical jungle, and one can see many families and foreign tourist walking about leisurely, especially it was a Sunday morning then. It was more of a day outing, walking about in the ‘tame’ tropical jungle, among the valuable logs of the tropic.

Valuable because if loggers can get their hands to these logs they would be so happy, and probably can make their first million overnight. Many such eager people are in Malaysia today.

Wild or not, the gang learnt a thing or two. Now we saw what a Kapor tree looks like and how Jelutong tree can be of value. And the other timber trees, there were too many to be remembered especially by those who have no inclination towards forestry or the timber industry. The famous ‘tongkat ali’ tree was shown but it was just a small plant. Unlike the small tree that I have the picture of here. http://www.tongkatali.org/

I must confess that it was quite a dull walk, no wild animal sighted, no small crawling animals like jungle lizard, saw a few big ants and a few hungry land leeches (these are smaller than the fresh water leeches, they tend to wave their heads about and they move about by curving the bodies, but they do suck blood like other leeches in n the family). I must say that except for the female children, the male children were quite brave or even looked forward to finding these small leeches. Unfortunately one or two of the female children had leeches finding them, not enough to worry about anyway, and an adult never even realise he caught a leech until he saw blood at his trousers leg.

Most of the old folks return early after the walk in the ‘jungle’,

but many of the youngsters went on to climb the hill to the tree-top canopy walk and returned about 1 hours later to the gathering point at Biz Café. They all looked very pleased, they must have enjoyed themselves at the canopy walk. One old folks tried to climb to hill with these youngsters but did not go very far up when he realised that he could not make the climb. The FRIM guide had to guide him back.

As usual, after the lunch there was a Birthday celebration of all those members of the gang whose birthday falls during the month, in this case Feb. A combination of grandfather, grand mother and grandchildren born in Feb gathered to blow the candle and to cut the birthday cake.

The party broke up at about 2.00 pm, having enjoyed the company of all the members of the gang and their family, a pleasant and productive day trip, gathered new experience in a different mode, a non-city mode. Until the next breakfast gathering.

MCKK contribution

I picked this up from MCOBA-MALAYSIA forum. I am blogging it here so that the article does not get lost to oblivion.

Salam all,

While working on a Merdeka TV series recently, I was appalled to hear
a professional Malay ask basically; "apa pentingnya atau sumbangan
MCKK untuk kemerdekaan?". While I have given that person a lesson in
MCKK history and contributions, I don't want others to have that kind
of ignorance. Itu Melayu, apa lagi yang bukan-Melayu. ..

I have written a short article below, to be published as widely as
possible for a Malay-readership (later on I will translate it into
English). Note that it shouldn't be long as surveys show Malays have
a short reading attention span, especially for history or anything
that doesn't have to do with novel cinta, gosip hiburan & politik.

If anyone could please read through and give constructive input to

Malay College Kuala Kangsar, Perak ¡V Sekolah Pembenih Merdeka

bukan seorang Raja Melayu sendiri, iaitu Sultan Idris Murshidul 'Azam
Shah, Perak.
Tuanku Muhammad Shah (Negeri Sembilan).

kecil peranannya, menerjahkan kemerdekaan.
Malah Bapa
Kemerdekaan kita Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra sendiri pernah menjadi

Raja Chulan Pengerusi Malay College Board of Governors mendesak

mengkritik British, termasuk novel klasiknya "Putera Gunung Tahan"

ahli UMNO. Mereka termasuklah Raja Ayoub Raja Bot, Laksamana Razali

Abdullah (Selangor), Dato' Abdul Malek Yusuf (Negeri Sembilan), Dato'
Sir Mahmud Mat (Pahang), Dato' Kamaruddin Idris (Terengganu) , Raja
Haji Ahmad (Perlis), Dato' Nik Ahmad Kamil (Kelantan), Tengku Mohamed
bin Sultan Ahmad Tengku Panglima Perang (Terengganu) dan tak
dilupakan, Dato' Onn Ja'afar (Johor).

A tragedy

This blog was created from original messages and from write up and in various e-mails (italicised) and discussion e-Groups. So the language is a mixed of Malay and English.
- Blog owner.

I thought you may want to know if you have not heard already,
Dato Yeop Adlan's son Bakti passed away in Australia in a car accident.

Innaa-lillaah ………………………. Al-Faatihah.

Allahyarham Bakti Adlan bin Yeop Adlan was the only son of Yeop Adlan. He was a young 25 year-old promising single handicapper golfer and had gone to Brisbane to pursue a golf management course when tragedy struck.

Last night ramai MCOBs kat masjid, mainly Yeop's batch. Everything was punctual and jenazah left for burial at about 10.30pm. Alhamdullilah.

Many reasons, Haji, why the process takes a long time. My explanation below assumes that all documentation and legal procedures are fine - I am sure I have missed out some steps.

At the foreign country, first is to wait for completion of the post-mortem. If no problems (e.g. body not needed by coroner), then formally claim the body and complete the paperwork thereon. Then the preparation of the body by Muslim undertaker untuk dimandi & dikapankan, etc and sealing in a casket and transported to the cargo terminal. Then more paperwork for clearance as a cargo item on an aircraft. Then to book space on an airline and be given one after all the paperwork is completed and shown to the cargo and airline companies. Finally, loading of the casket on the aircraft and flight time.

In Malaysia, after touchdown the cargo is taken to the cargo centre at KLIA after all passengers have left the aircraft. Then you have to undergo normal clearance procedures for the cargo (boleh dicepatkan on compassionate grounds). Then to the mosque for prayers and finally burial.

Takbir

For future Hari Raya.

Hari Raya Haji 31 Dec 2006

Some of us had a day at Nik's place at Janda Baik (1/2 hour drive east from KL) on the Eid ul-Adha occassion. The handsome couple and their children & spouses and grandchildren played hosts to all the visitors. Local treat breakfast and home cooked Malaysian lunch were served.

And for the kampong folks, Nik & family (and friends) slaughtered 8 cows and distributed these to them.

A very fruitful day spent.

Thank you Nik & Daisy, may Allah bless you both.
